Applicant Attributes
Due to the number of diverse requirements for obtaining a
degree, the Department admits only the highest caliber students
who have the proven aptitude and motivation to complete the long,
difficult program. In judging an application, the following factors
are taken into consideration:
Applicant's Preparation:
- Undergraduate major(s) and school - area of particular interest,
variety of (scientific) subjects taken, academic standards of
school attended;
- Undergraduate GPA; major GPA and performance in other relevant
subject areas;
- GRE General Test and Subject Test (chosen by the applicant)
scores;
- Letters of recommendation, particularly from faculty and
research supervisors;
- Graduate work (if any) and GPA;
- Related work experience; publications (if any).
Applicant's Motivation, Appropriateness of Program for Interests,
Availability of Adequate Resources for Student's Goals and Interests;
- Statement of Purpose - expressed interest in both mathematics
and biology (although it is not essential that applicant be optimally
prepared to undertake graduate level work in both areas before
beginning program);
- Motivation to be involved primarily in biomathematics rather
than pure research in statistics, applied math, or experimentation;
- Availability of faculty to provide training in field of interest.
