Financial Support

The most highly qualified applicants are made highly competitive offers for financial support. However, it is unfortunate that our resources, including unrestricted financial support and tuition waivers, are limited and that we must be very selective. Only U.S. citizens and permanent residents can compete for our NIH Systems and Integrative Biomathematics grant. We do not have an undergraduate degree program, and therefore have only one T.A. slot and No "reader" positions. Research positions do open up, but entering students without appropriate experience are at some disadvantage in competing for them.

Nearly all of our direct support for entering and continuing students is merit-based, and we have a separate committee that ranks and tries to match applicants to appropriate departmental funds and campus-wide awards. We have an enviable record in obtaining university sponsored competitive awards for entering and continuing students, but this reflects mostly the higher caliber of our students. All aspects of an entering student’s application (transcripts, GRE scores, letters, Statement of Purpose, past research experience, etc.) are used in our evaluations. Therefore, incompleteness in an application (e.g., missing GRE scores) may place an applicant at a disadvantage (see also item 1). Most of our competitive awards begin in the fall quarter; applicants for consideration of such awards should be received complete well before January 15.

In some cases, we offer admission to an excellent student without promise for financial support. Students who anticipate working for self-support should be aware that programming and/or date analysis and statistical computing skills are particularly in demand on campus.
